Dirk Booysen

Dirk attended Optometry school from 1981 through 1984 at the Wits Technicon School of Optometry in Johannesburg, obtaining a Diploma in Optometry. The next two years of compulsory military training was spent in the Windhoek State Hospital department of Ophthalmology (Namibia) as a medical officer.

During 1986 he started the practice in Krugersdorp and has been in private practice ever since, specializing in contact lens practice and co-management. From 1987 through 1993 he lectured part time at the Wits School of Optometry in Practice Management, Ocular Anatomy and Physiology and Ocular Pathology, part of his duties involved practical training of students at external clinics.

He also served as the national examiner in Ocular Anatomy and Physiology during 1990 through 1992, and currently moderates the Ocular Pathology final exam at the University of Johannesburg.

Dirk furthered his career by obtaining post graduate qualifications from the Institute of Optometry (UK), Pennsylvania College of Optometry (US) and the New England College of Optometry (US) from 1992 through 1998, and Aston University 2011 through 2016. He holds registration in South Africa, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Namibia.

Dirk is involved in the South African continued professional development program and frequently lectures at local and International conferences on numerous topics including, Keratoconus, Sport Vision, Contact lens Practice, Ocular Nutrition, Ocular therapeutics, Dry Eye, and Computer vision syndrome. He has lectured on dry eye at SECO in Atlanta during February 2006 with good reviews. Dirk has published articles on Keratoconus, Contact lens management of post-surgical corneas, Sport Vision and Dry Eye.

He is currently the clinical editor of Eye Care Africa journal and regularly contributes articles to the journal. Dirk has recently published the South African guide to topical ophthalmic drugs which is an annual review published by Eyesite.co.za.

He has served on the board of directors of the SAOA, Chiasma and IsoLeso for many years, and as well as a member of the professional board of Optometry (HPCSA) tasked with regulation of the profession in SA. He is also co-founder of the Contact lens institute which provided quality post graduate education to South African optometrists.

Dirk is married to Sarah and they have two Children, Meagan aged 22 and John Leslie aged 19. He is involved in the local community and has served as chairman of Monument Primary school's governing body. He joined the "Drug Child" program initiated to address the illegal drug use amongst the younger school going children where he provides advice and financial support to the program. His hobbies include flying, Scuba diving and spending time in the bush. He holds a pilot's licence with more than 1000 flying hours as well as a scuba diving two star instructors rating.
